All Things Danish

(261 products)

No country has exported a mood quite like Denmark's. Hygge — broadly "cozy contentment" — is the framing Danes use for the warm rituals that turn an ordinary evening into something worth keeping: candlelight, good food, soft wool, someone you like nearby. This collection carries that mood. You'll find Wally & Whiz wine gums from Copenhagen, Koustrupco hand-drawn dishcloths, lakrids (the Danish word for licorice — salty, sweet, and in every Danish childhood), wool socks and throws, pillar and taper candles, Danish cookbooks and children's books, and the small design objects that make Danish kitchens and tables feel like themselves. Everything here is Danish in origin, design, or tradition. Build a hygge gift, start a licorice habit, or send a Copenhagen-made treat to someone who deserves it.

What Hygge Actually Means

Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah) is the Danish word for warm, unhurried contentment — candles burning, wool across your lap, coffee or tea in hand, good company or a good book. In Danish usage, hygge isn't something you buy; it's something you arrange. Denmark consistently ranks among the world's happiest countries, and hygge is one of the ways Danes describe the daily rituals behind it. The word can't be bought — but the supporting cast (candles, wool, licorice, warm drinks) can. Danes also have a documented national habit of lighting more candles per capita than any other nation, which isn't unrelated.

The Makers Behind This Collection

Wally & Whiz — Copenhagen-based gourmet wine gum maker. Natural fruit flavors, beautifully packaged, a favorite Danish gift.

Koustrup & Co — Danish illustrator-designer whose ink-drawn dishcloths, aprons, and tea towels feature folk, botanical, and bird motifs.

Lakrids by Bülow — founded in 2007 by Johan Bülow on the Danish island of Bornholm, now cooked in a Copenhagen factory. Premium chocolate-coated gourmet licorice in the numbered line (A, B, D, F, E salmiak). B-Corp certified.

Danish licorice (lakrids) — Denmark is licorice country. Our Licorice collection covers classic Danish styles from sweet to salmiak salted.

Danish candle culture — ball, taper, tea-light, and LED candles from Nordic makers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pronounce "hygge"?

HOO-gah. Short "oo" as in "book," emphasis on the first syllable, soft "h." Danes are forgiving about the pronunciation; Americans get it wrong constantly and it's fine.

What's the difference between hygge, fika, and lagom?

Hygge (Danish) is cozy contentment. Fika (Swedish) is a daily coffee break with something sweet, usually shared. Lagom (Swedish) is "just the right amount" — moderation. All three describe different Nordic approaches to a good life.

What is salmiak?

Salmiak is salty licorice — licorice flavored with ammonium chloride. It reads as intensely salty to non-Nordic palates and is beloved by anyone raised on it. Lakrids by Bülow's "E" is a salmiak variant.

Do you ship licorice and chocolate internationally?

Yes. Chocolate can soften in hot summer transit — we recommend expedited shipping in warm months.
