Cultural Note

The Dala horse (Dalahäst) is the ultimate symbol of Sweden, representing courage, loyalty, and a warm welcome. The "Maria" horse is embellished with Kurbits painting, a distinct Swedish folk art style originating in the 18th century. Characterized by imaginative, flowing floral flourishes, Kurbits elements showcase the creative spirit and rural heritage of the Dalarna province.

Product FAQ's

Who is "Maria" named after?

This special anniversary edition horse is named after Munter Maria, who co-founded the world-renowned Grannas A. Olsson Hemslöjd workshop alongside her husband Grannas Anders in 1922. It was created specifically to honor the founding family's enduring legacy.

Is this horse carved from a single piece of wood?

Yes, authentic Dala horses are hand-carved from seasoned Swedish pine blocks. Master carvers carefully shape the wood using traditional hand tools before passing the piece to artisans who apply the coats of paint and delicate freehand Kurbits detailing.

Is this a numbered limited edition?

Not strictly numbered, but the Anniversary Series rotates through the Grannas catalog in smaller quantities than the classic colors. Availability can vary year to year.
