The Big Three — Lindgren, Jansson, Beskow

Astrid Lindgren (Sweden, 1907–2002) — the most widely translated Swedish children's author. Pippi Longstocking began as a bedtime story Lindgren told her sick daughter Karin in 1941; Lindgren wrote it down in March 1944 while recovering from a sprained ankle, and published it in 1945 (illustrated by Ingrid Vang Nyman). Pippi is nine, strong enough to lift a horse, lives alone with a monkey and a suitcase of gold coins, and answers to no adult. The series continues with Pippi Goes on Board, Pippi in the South Seas, and Pippi Won't Grow Up.

Tove Jansson (Finland, 1914–2001) — Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, creator of the Moomin family. The first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood, was published in 1945. Comet in Moominland (1946) and Finn Family Moomintroll (1948) followed. Jansson wrote all her books in Swedish, her native language as a Swedish-speaking Finn.

Elsa Beskow (Sweden, 1874–1953) — Swedish illustrator-author. Her commercial breakthrough was Peter in Blueberry Land (1901); she published some forty books over her career. Her picture books (Children of the Forest and others) are still standards of Scandinavian nursery reading.

Folk Tales & Mythology for Kids

Ulf Stark & Eva Eriksson — Yule Tomte and the Little Rabbits. Swedish Christmas classic. Companion title: Midsummer Tomte and the Little Rabbits.

Runestone Saga: Children of Ragnarok. Norse mythology for middle-grade readers — a good entry point for kids interested in Thor and Loki.

Troll storiesSeven Ways to Trick a Troll (Lise Lunge Larsen), Troll Forest: A Norwegian Tale (Donna Marie Seim), Troll Magic (with Kittelsen illustrations).

Moomin extensionsMoomin Mail (interactive), My First Moomin: Goodnight Moomin (board book), Moomin 123: Counting Book.
