Introduction
Every October 9th, Americans celebrate Leif Erikson Day, honoring the Norse explorer believed to be the first European to set foot in North America — nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. For those with Scandinavian roots, it’s more than just a day on the calendar: it’s a chance to celebrate history, heritage, and the adventurous spirit of the Vikings.
At Swedish Gift Store, we believe Leif Erikson Day is a perfect time to reflect on the strength and courage of Scandinavian explorers while also enjoying the traditions, culture, and products that connect us back to Sweden and the broader Nordic world.

🌍 Who Was Leif Erikson?
Leif Erikson, often called “Leif the Lucky,” was the son of Erik the Red, the founder of Greenland’s first Norse settlements. Around the year 1000 CE, Leif set sail from Greenland and landed in a place he called Vinland — believed by many historians to be somewhere along the coast of modern-day Newfoundland, Canada.
While details are still debated, the sagas describe Vinland as a place rich with resources, including wild grapes, fertile soil, and abundant fish. Whether or not you believe every detail of the sagas, one thing is certain: Leif Erikson symbolizes the bravery and curiosity that defined the Viking Age.

Why Do We Celebrate Leif Erikson Day in the US?
Leif Erikson Day became an official observance in the United States in 1964, thanks to President Lyndon B. Johnson. October 9th was chosen because it marks the arrival of the Restauration, a ship that carried the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to the United States in 1825.
While the holiday recognizes Leif Erikson, it also honors the contributions of all Nordic immigrants — Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, and Finnish — who helped shape the culture of the United States. For Swedish-Americans, it’s a chance to celebrate both Viking heritage and the rich Swedish traditions that continue to thrive today.

"The pain that we cause is the cause of our pain."
