Greta Lann Blue Fluted Dala Horse
"Blue Fluted" is a Danish porcelain pattern from Royal Copenhagen dating back to 1775. Each piece is carefully painted by hand. A little rebellious, I combined a famous Danish pattern with a classic symbol of Sweden, the Dala Horse. These hand-carved horses originated as toys that farmers carved in the winter months. Now they are a symbol of the Dalarna Province and Sweden.
The Dala Horse is a traditional symbol of Sweden. The wooden horses originated as toys that fathers carved for their children. I loved making this watercolor with the flowers forming a wreath around the horse. I kept the "saddle" and other designs of the horse the usual shape but replaced the traditional Swedish brushstrokes with flowers and hearts. I usually outline my drawings with black ink, but here I left that out for a softer look.
