Frequently Asked Questions
The Dala Horse is an iconic, hand-carved wooden horse that originated in the Dalarna province of Sweden. Centuries ago, it started as a simple toy whittled by logs in front of winter cabin fires. Today, it has evolved into the ultimate symbol of Sweden, representing warm hospitality, good luck, and traditional Swedish folk art.
Authentic Dala Horses are crafted from slow-growing pine harvested from the forests around Lake Siljan in Dalarna. Because the winter climate in northern Sweden is so cold, the trees grow very slowly, making the wood tight-grained, sturdy, and absolutely perfect for precision woodcarving.
True authenticity comes down to a tiny village in Sweden called Nusnäs. If your horse is made by Nils Olsson or Grannas A. Olsson, it is 100% authentic.
- The Makers: Grannas (founded in 1922) and Nils Olsson (founded in 1928) are the oldest, most respected workshops in the world. They sit practically side-by-side in Nusnäs.
- The Stamp: Every genuine horse features a specific manufacturer’s label on its chest or underbelly, confirming it was handmade in Sweden.
- The Imperfections: Because they are cut with a band saw and then hand-carved with traditional knives, no two horses have the exact same facial slope or leg thickness. You are holding a completely unique piece of art.
A single Dala Horse passes through up to nine different pairs of artisan hands before it reaches our store shelves.

That beautiful, flowing, flower-like pattern painted onto the horse’s saddle and harness is called Kurbits (or krusmålning).
The Meaning Behind the Motif: Kurbits is a traditional Swedish fantasy folk-art style that dates back to the 1700s. The word itself comes from the Latin term for a gourd plant (Cucurbita), representing a mythical, fast-growing vine that symbolizes protection, abundance, and new life.
The artists paint these flourishes freehand using a "two-color" brush technique (loading two different colors onto the brush at once) to create those signature, seamless gradients and swirls in minutes.
While you can find them in gorgeous blues, whites, blacks, and natural wood today, the classic bright red (Falu rödfärg) is steeped in history. The pigment originally came from the copper mines in Falun, Dalarna. It was the most readily available paint for local families and soldiers, who used it to give the wood a cheerful, vibrant pop.
