Who Were the Vikings — Shared Nordic Heritage

The Vikings sailed, traded, raided, and settled across a wide arc of the North Atlantic between roughly 793 and 1066 AD. They came from what are today Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland — which is why "Viking" identity is pan-Nordic rather than belonging to any one country. Swedish Vikings tended east (the Rus), Norwegian Vikings west (Iceland, Greenland, Vinland), Danish Vikings south (England, France). The visual vocabulary we associate with them — longships with carved dragon prows, runes, braided silver — still shapes how the Nordic countries present their heritage today.

Viking Symbols in This Collection

Longship (drakkar). The Viking ship — clinker-built, single-masted, rowed and sailed. A symbol of exploration across the Nordic countries. Appears on mugs, shot glasses, pewter figurines, and embroidered beanies.

Vegvisir (the "wayfinder" compass). An eight-armed Icelandic symbol of protection for travelers. Note: the earliest documented Vegvisir appears in the 1860 Icelandic Huld manuscript, not in the Viking age — it's a later Icelandic magical symbol often associated with Viking heritage.

Were the Vikings Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish?

All of the above, plus Icelandic. "Viking" describes a maritime culture that spanned what are today Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. Modern country borders didn't exist yet.

Did Vikings wear horned helmets?

No. The horned-helmet image comes from 19th-century costume design, not archaeological evidence. Real Viking helmets were simple conical metal or leather caps. We carry both historical and costume styles — buy what you like, but know the history.
