What Is a Tomte?

A Tomte (Swedish) — also called Nisse (Norwegian and Danish) and Tonttu (Finnish) — is the household guardian spirit of Scandinavian folklore. Traditionally small, bearded, and in a red pointed cap, the Tomte lives in the barn or under the floorboards of a farm, watching over the household: tending to animals at night, noticing when things are run badly. In exchange he expects a bowl of julgröt (buttered rice porridge) on Christmas Eve — and a fiercely bad mood if he doesn't get it. Over the past century the Tomte has merged gently with the Christmas gift-bringer figure, and Jultomten now plays the Swedish equivalent of Santa Claus. The older Tomte — farm-dwelling, year-round, watchful — is still the figure behind most Tomte figurines in this collection.

Tomte vs. Garden Gnome

Gnomes that live in gardens or come out for Halloween are a different tradition — largely Germanic, and modern. They're decorative rather than folkloric.
