The Nordic Cross

All five Nordic flags share the Nordic Cross — a horizontal cross offset to the left, a nod to the shared Christian heritage of the region.

Denmark (Dannebrog) — red with a white Nordic cross. The oldest continuously used national flag in the world, per Guinness World Records; the current design was adopted in 1625.

Sweden — blue with a yellow Nordic cross.

Norway — red with a blue-edged white Nordic cross.

Finland — white with a blue Nordic cross.

Iceland — blue with a red-edged white Nordic cross.

The offset cross design originated with Denmark's Dannebrog and was adopted by the other Nordic countries as they formed modern national identities.

Danish Flag Day — June 15 (Valdemarsdag) — legendary date of the Dannebrog's descent from the sky at the 1219 Battle of Lyndanisse. Flown at homes and parades.

Norwegian Constitution Day — May 17 (Syttende Mai) — Norway's national day. Parades, bunads, and flags everywhere.

Swedish National Day — June 6 (Sveriges nationaldag) — the biggest Swedish flag-flying day.

Finnish Independence Day — December 6 — a quieter observance; blue and white everywhere.

Icelandic National Day — June 17 — flags and parades.

Midsummer (late June) — celebrated across all five countries; flags are central decor.

Many Nordic-American families also fly the country flag on immigrant-ancestor birthdays and heritage-themed gatherings.
