By the 1800s, the julbock had transformed again — this time into the straw figure we know today. Farmers saved the last sheaf of grain from the harvest, believing it held the spirit of the fields. They shaped it into a goat, tied it with red ribbon, and placed it near the hearth.
In some villages, the julbock carried a sack of presents on his back. In others, he accompanied the tomte, making sure the gifts were given fairly.
